SYROS, GREECE

cyclades

Syros, home to the South Aegean capital of Ermoupli, is best known for its stunning outcrops of high-pressure low-temperature metamorphism. In the early Cenozoic the Cycladic region was the site of active plate boundary with the Apulian (small fragment of the African) plate being subducted beneath the Eurasion plate. During the Miocene, part of the subducted slab was exhumed, resulting in exposure of blueschist and greenschist metamorphism on the island.
